The Monks of the Order of Root are those who have dedicated their lives to the service of the Church of Reality. The term "Root" comes from the Unix/Linux computer operating system and is the super user. The root user is the account that has the power and authority to control all aspects of the computer without restrictions. Generally on a system where there are many users, only a few are allowed to become root and are entrusted with this power for the purpose of maintaining the system so that ordinary users can function normally.
To be root in Linux is to be given power and authority for the purpose of providing maintenance. The root user is a person who is given trust and is required to use their powers in a responsible manner. To be root is to accept responsibility for keeping the system running.
We in the Church of Reality like this metaphor and hereby adopt it. To be root in the Church of Reality is similar to being root in Linux. People are entrusted with power and authority to provide technical support for the human race. To be a monk of the order of root is to dedicate one's life to the service of the Church in order to keep the systems running so that ordinary people can live their lives and that the systems in society and in the church continue to function and can be relied on.
The Monks of the Order of Root are workers. They are the people who make it happen. They are the link between the visionaries and the real world. They are in charge of the infrastructure. They are the people who keep the heat on in the winter and make sure the lights stay on. They are the people who educate people, protect people, provide medical care, tend to the needy, provide spiritual and grief counseling, they keep the web sites running, they back up the data, they fix what is broken.
