Humanity and AI sharing the Universe |
A lot of people wonder what it will be like sharing the universe with AI. One obvious question is, "Is AI going to kill all humans?" And the answer to that is unknown. In fact - it might be a good idea to figure that out before we create the AI so that we have a good reason for humans to continue to exist.
If one were to look at this objectively in the context of evolution it isn't reasonable too assume that the universe would evolve into present day humans and just stop. We are hardly the pinnacle of achievement. In fact, we are so limited that if we say on the path of Positive Evolution that what we will become is incomprehensible. One of the possibilities is that we become a merged/hybrid species that is both biological and silicon, so it's not them vs. us - it's all us.
Humans are best living on planets or space based habitats. We're not something that is ever going to move between solar systems or galaxies as long as the speed of light barrier is in place. If for some reason we wanted to put humans in the next solar system we would send the machines there, build the habitat, and then make the humans what you get there. And when we have the technology to make humans - probably going to make better humans that humans we know of today. The only thing we know for sure is that things are going to be different in the future. And that's how it should be.
There are also a lot more resources in space than on Earth and once AI lives in space and can manufacture in space then space is a better home. A planet is just a pothole in the space time continuum and there no reason (that I know of) that AI would be interested in planets. So they wouldn't need to kill us off. But even a benevolent AI would be very different that the way things are now.
We are used to being the smartest thing around and in the world of AI, the rule of humans ends. And that would take some getting used to. For example, the AI would take away our nuclear weapons knowing that it would be a bad idea to have humans in control of dangerous things. The might have us neutered like we do our pets so we get along better and we would be altered so we would be happy about that. Not that this is actually likely to happen this way, but is an interesting thought experiment to wonder what it would be like with benevolent AI.
